Methane Abatement

Track record in leading the development of methane abatement engineering and technology solutions.

Peak Carbon engineers helped pioneer the capture and utilisation of coal mine methane and the development of the associated carbon accounting methodology over 20 years ago, a practice that is now the standard operating procedure in coal mines worldwide.

Peak Carbon has since designed and implemented a proprietary technology for the destruction of Ventilation Air Methane (VAM). The team led the implementation of the VAM technology at UK Coal’s Hatfield mine and has led design and applications engineering development for projects in the UK, Kazakhstan, China and the US. Our project development and implementation strategy is technology agnostic, with the flexibility to use either branded technology suppliers or alternatively our own proven and mature solutions.

We are currently focused on financing and implementing of methane abatement projects in the USA, Australia and China.

Case Study:
Efficient solutions for VAM for over ten years

Peak Carbon engineers designed, built and operated a regenerative thermal oxidiser (RTO) for the destruction of ventilation air methane (VAM) at UK Coal’s Hatfield mine.

The project started operation in 2011 and processed 90,000 Nm3 of mine ventilation air per hour at 0.3% methane concentration. The unit operated to a minimum concentration of 0.18% methane concentration, up to a maximum of 1% methane concentration, although the design can be easily optimised for heat exchange appropriate to a mine specific operating range.

The process was thoroughly reviewed by the UK HSE Mines Inspectorate and approved for operation.
